Chapter Twelve: A Change of Plans

When I told Mom what had happened with Jimmy Colton, she was not surprised. "See what happens when you look for men who are as crazy as you? I had a marvelous dinner with Doctor Farrow. He told me all about how he de-programs those cult kids. It’s quite fascinating. These children tell their own parents they’re going to hell! Can you imagine?"

I couldn’t resist a rejoinder. I was feeling pretty good. "Oh? What’s so unusual about that? I’ve told you to go there many times."

"Abbilah, I’m serious! Doctor Farrow even had his life in jeopardy once when a whole pack of Moonies attacked him on the street. He has to totally reconstruct the patients' psyches after those people get to them." Mom was looking spry herself. It made me begin to believe the books that talk about sex after sixty being sensational.

"Jimmy wants to take us both out on the town with him after his show. So let’s go down to that little dress shop I saw in the lobby and buy us some nice outfits. Whatcha say, Mom?"

The Luxor Hotel presented Wayne in its Pharaoh’s Theater, and Jimmy had front row tickets. Wayne Newton is "Mister Las Vegas." He has taken over where Elvis left off, and his shows have entered the Guinness Book of Records for the most attendance. Jimmy likes the way he makes his entrance--in a puff of smoke--and Wayne is a big dude. He buys rounds of champagne to his adoring fans, and we were lucky enough to receive a magnum at our table. I had to watch out that Mom got very little. When she gets snockered, my mother becomes a maudlin ambassador.

We all laughed when Wayne began his act. He said, "You all know I’m a Cherokee. That means, if you don’t like my act, then you can send me back to the reservation."

Wayne was playing his fourth musical instrument when our table was visited by two very sinister-looking types in dark clothes and matching faces. "Mister Montello wants to see you," they said, draping over our table like vultures. "Just you . . . and he means now," said the one with an eye-twitch, and he pointed a sausage-finger at me.

"Excuse me, folks," I said, trying to look relaxed. Inside, I was getting a bit nervous. Montello’s henchmen had probably been following me all over Vegas. "It sounds like the Pharaoh calls. I’ll be back shortly."

"Where will you be, love?" said Jimmy, a concerned look on his face. "In case we need to get in touch."

"I’ll be at the Flamingo. Don’t wait for me, though, if I’m late. Just make sure Mom stays out of the champagne and gets into bed at a decent hour." I stood up and followed the two thugs out of the ballroom, accompanied by Wayne’s famous rendition of "Danke Shein." He sounded strange, as his voice was a mature baritone. Women threw him their panties and bras rather than wanting to cuddle him.
